Soft Limit has been an integral part of Apogee converters such as the AD-8000, Symphony I/O and Duet 3 since the release of their first standalone unit – the AD-500 – in 1991.
“During the development of the AD-500, we recognized that while new digital audio technology offered superior performance and lower distortion, the technical shortcomings of the analog tape created a pleasing sound that the engineers did not want. give up,” Apogee said.
“And so Soft Limit was created, an analog circuit placed before the AD conversion stage to gracefully round out transients and add harmonic warmth.”
The original version featured a fixed threshold, while the plug-in version is adjustable, while an auto-makeup feature can increase the output level as the threshold decreases.
The manual setting offers 18 dB of variation, while the same level of compensation can be applied before the Soft Limit section with the drive control.
The plugin offers up to 16x oversampling rates, so you never experience the shrill effects of aliasing. Even at the highest oversampling rate, it is very efficient with CPU power and extremely low latency.
Meanwhile, Soft Limit’s precise input, soft limit, and output meters show you exactly how the plug-in shapes your sound, from subtle to powerful.
The plugin is available in AAX Native, AU, VST and VST3 formats, and is compatible with macOS 10.12.6 and higher (and has been validated on 10.14.6 and higher), and any version of Windows 10 (validated on 10 20H2 and above).
