Discord not downloading or installing

Compared to using Discord on the web browser, the user experience on its desktop app version is significantly better. However, sometimes you may encounter errors while installing the Discord app on your PC.

An error message stating “Installation failed.“Or, Discord installer may get stuck on different screens like Checking for Updates, or Installing 1 of 1, etc. These errors mainly prevail when you try to reinstall Discord or sometimes even while installing it for the first time.

Nevertheless, here is an article explaining why Discord won’t install and how you can fix it.

Why isn’t Discord installing?

Discord will usually not install properly if its previous uninstallation process was not smooth. Sometimes, even after uninstalling Discord, some of its services may still work, which can lead to installation errors. But, that may not always be the case. Here are some additional causes.

  • anti-virus
  • Corrupt app data
  • Outdated Discord app
  • Out of space
  • Bad internet connection

How to fix Discord not installing or downloading?

Restarting your PC is the first thing you can try if you encounter Discord installation errors. Also try running the DiscordSetup.exe file as administrator. If that doesn’t fix the problem, you can try the other fixes listed below.

Run DiscordSetup.exe in compatibility mode

Compatibility mode uses settings from older versions of Windows to run an executable file. Sometimes files that have runtime issues can work fine with the help of it. To run the Discord installer in compatibility mode, you can follow these steps.

  1. Select the DiscordSetup.exe file and Right click above.
  2. Open Properties and go to Compatibility tongue.
  3. In compatibility mode, enable “Run this program in compatibility mode to”.
  4. Choose any version of Windows using the Scrolling menu menu.
  5. Select Apply and click on OKAY.

Uninstall previous versions

You will need to ensure that previous installations of Discord have been uninstalled before installing the app. To uninstall Discord on Windows, follow these steps.

  1. Open the start menu
  2. Go to Settings and select Apps and features.
  3. Click on the 3 points icon next to Discord.

Run Update for Discord App

If Discord AppData is not corrupted, you can run the update file to fix it. To do so, you can follow these steps.

  1. Hurry the Windows + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type and enter %Appdata% on the race box.
  3. Go to Local and open it Discord case.
  4. Right click on the Update case.Windows-Discord-Local-Update
  5. Click on Execute as administrator.
  6. Select Yes to confirm.
  7. Wait a few minutes for the process to complete, then try installing Discord.

Clear app data and reinstall Discord

Before you install Discordyou need to clear the AppData left over from the previous Discord install.

To clear the cache, you can follow these steps.

Under Windows

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. In the Process tab, find Discord, right click on it and select Final task.
  3. Now go to start tab and disable Discord Update application.
  4. Go to the Details tab and complete all Discord-related tasks.
  5. Also make sure you have quit Discord from the system tray.
  6. Now press the Windows + R on your keyboard to open Run.
  7. Type and enter %AppData% in the racing box.
  8. Look for Discordand delete the folder.Delete Roaming Folder - Discord
  9. Now open Run box again and enter %LocalAppData%.
  10. Find Discord here and delete the folder.
  11. Restart your PC.
  12. Now download Discord from the official site.
  13. Open the DiscordSetup.exe and follow the instructions given to install Discord.

To note: You need to make sure every instance of Discord is closed, even the web version.

On Mac

  1. Bring up Spotlight by pressing Ordered + Space.
  2. Now type Activity Monitor and press Come back.
  3. In Activity Monitor, search for Discord.
  4. Double click on Discord and click on Leave.Leave Discord
  5. Then select To leave to confirm.
  6. Also get rid of all other Discord processes like Discord Wizard.
  7. Now open Finder and tap Ordered + Gap + g.
  8. Paste this location ~/Library/Application Support
  9. Find the Discord folder here and select it.Discord App Data
  10. Hurry Ordered + Option + Wipe off to permanently delete the folder.
  11. Now go to /Library/Application Support using the same process.
  12. If there is a Discord folder here, delete that too.
  13. Now go to Apps folder and also delete Discord from there.
  14. Restart your PC.
  15. Now download Discord from their official site.
  16. Open the .DMG file and drag the Discord icon to your Apps case.

Check your internet connection

Discord may not download if you are having connection issues. It’s best to make sure your internet connection is working. You can use the troubleshooter to fix all network-related issues.

To do this, follow these steps.

Under Windows

  1. Open the Start menu and go to Settings.
  2. Go to System and select Troubleshoot.
  3. Click on Other convenience stores.
  4. Now click on the To run button next to Internet connections.

On Mac

First, you can try changing your DNS to Google Public. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Open System Preferences by clicking the Apple logo in the menu bar.
  2. Go to Network and select Wireless or whatever you use.
  3. Click on Advanced and go to the DNS tab.
  4. Under DNS Servers, click the To add icon Add a DNS server
  5. Add these DNS servers.
    • 2001:4860:4860::8888
    • 2001:4860:4860::8844
  6. Click OK and try to download Discord again.

If that doesn’t work, you can renew your Mac’s IP address. To do so, you can follow these steps.

  1. Go to Advanced Network Preferences following the same steps as above. Instead of going to the DNS tab, select the TCP/IP tongue.
  2. Now click on Renew DHCP Lease and click on OKAY.Renew DHCP Lease
  3. Try downloading Discord again.

Clear all Discord data

There may still be corrupted discord data if you cannot install it with the above fixes. To make sure you have deleted them all, follow these steps.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. To research Discord.
  3. The search may take some time. After you are done, delete all Discord related files.
  4. Erase your Basket.
  5. Restart your PC.
  6. Install Discord again.
