Download Wordle to your computer or phone to keep playing for free

After the recent acquisition, The Times hinted that Wordle might not be free to play any longer.

As a self-proclaimed cruciverbist, I was delighted to discover Wordle this year. the the concept of the game is simple: you get six tries for guess the random five letter word of the day, guided by tiles of different colors. It’s fun and incredibly addictive: I play Wordle every day, doing the right word at midnight when I can. But I was a little worried to hear that The New York Times had recently bought Wordle, mainly because the media giant might hide the game behind a paywall in the future.

In one declaration published on the New York Times website, the company said that “the game will initially remain free for new and existing players.”

If that eases your anxiety, there’s a way to keep playing Wordle for free, even if you don’t end up playing it.

twitter user @aaronkbr posted an online thread, describing how Wordle runs entirely in your web browser. This technically means that you don’t need the internet to play Wordle, because thousands of daily future words exist on the webpage. And if you can download all parts of the webpage, you could in theory play wordle every day for years without ever being connected to the internet, because the game only needs the current date on your device to spit a new word for you.

Here’s how to download Wordle to your computer and smartphone so it’s free to play no matter what.

How to download Wordle to your computer

Regardless of your operating system (MacOS or Windows) or the web browser you use (Chrome or Safari, for example), you can easily download Wordle to your computer.

2. Next, right click anywhere on the web page.

3. Finally, save the page to your computer using one of the menu options that appears.

Depending on the web browser you are using, it may display Save as (Chrome) or save page as (Safari). Either option should download the Wordle web page as an HTML file.
