Sony has introduced a new tool that can also update the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller on the Windows PC. This means that controller firmware updates can also be installed without a PS 5. In fact, this innovation was a long time coming, as the new DualSense controller in the PlayStation 5 can be used like the DualShock controller in the PlayStation 4 to play at games. on the Windows PC and therefore does not require a console.
However, DualSense controllers previously had the limitation that firmware updates could only be installed through the console. This limitation no longer applies. “PC gamers can now update their DualSense wireless controller to the latest firmware for Windows 11 and select Windows 10 devices without connecting a PS5,” Sony announced today.
Free Firmware Update
All you need is the “Firmware Updater for DualSense Wireless Controller” app, which Sony provides for free. The controller must then be connected via a USB cable – the update will not work wirelessly. The application will then start when it has recognized the controller, with the necessary additional instructions.
This includes, for example, the request to download new firmware to the PC. Also, only one controller can be updated at a time, for other controllers to be updated you need to start the update process from the beginning again. The app is currently only available directly from Sony. According to Sony, the computer must meet the following minimum requirements for the updated client:
PC application requirements
- Windows 10 (64 bit) or Windows 11
- More than 10 MB of free disk space
- Screen resolution of 1024768 or higher
